Torben is a shiny young apple with a dream: making it to the bright lights of the supermarket fruit section. But his dream is shattered one sunny morning when a worm pokes her head out of his perfect skin. Sylvia is her name, and she is really very nice.

An off-screen narrator remembers a time he was five years old, walking to school in a heavy rain, wearing a yellow slicker and cap. He relates to us that a boy he'd never seen before ran up to him and said that it was raining worms. Our lad of five is on the cusp between believing anything he hears and entering the age of reason. He asks for proof. He holds out his hand.

In a future where we no longer have the ability to dream, people have turned to 'Fantasites', a genetically engineered parasite that induces the user's wildest fantasies. When one socially awkward young man begins using this new miracle dream aid, hoping they'll bring excitement to his mundane life and get him closer to the girl of his 'dreams,' he soon finds the line between reality and fantasy squirming away.

Grant as the hero, Sir Percy Blakeney, and his eponymous alter ego. The first series also starred Elizabeth McGovern as his wife Marguerite and Martin Shaw as the Pimpernel's archrival, Paul Chauvelin. Robespierre was played by Ronan Vibert. It was filmed in the Czech Republic and scored by a Czech composer, Michal Pavlíček.

Based on the classic adventure novels by Baroness Orczy, this series was one of the earliest costume dramas produced for television.
